Since its launch in early February, Apple’s Vision Pro has garnered considerable attention, with some speculating that it could potentially replace other Apple devices, particularly the iPad. Mark Gurman, a prominent leaker, recently added weight to this notion, suggesting that the Vision Pro could be a formidable competitor to the iPad. While the idea seems plausible, there’s one significant obstacle standing in the way: the price.

Is Apple’s Vision Pro the iPad Killer?

Gurman’s analysis highlights the Vision Pro’s potential to offer a superior experience for tasks traditionally handled by the iPad. From light work to entertainment and photo viewing, the Vision Pro boasts immersive capabilities that could outshine those of the iPad. Both devices cover similar functionalities and even share many of the same applications. Moreover, the Vision Pro’s spatial computing technology gives it a distinct advantage. However, despite its capabilities, whether the Vision Pro will outright replace the iPad remains uncertain.

A Lot Has to Change

The primary stumbling block in the Vision Pro’s quest to dethrone the iPad is its hefty price tag. Starting at $3,500, the Vision Pro commands one of the highest entry points among Apple’s product lineup. In stark contrast, one can acquire a brand-new iPad for a mere $329—a fraction of the Vision Pro’s cost. Even the top-tier iPad Pro, priced at $2,399, is significantly more affordable than the entry-level Vision Pro. This glaring price discrepancy poses a significant barrier for consumers considering a switch from the iPad to the Vision Pro.

A Vision for the Future

While rumors of a more affordable Vision Pro model are circulating, with projected prices ranging from $1,500 to $2,500, it remains out of reach for many potential consumers. To truly compete with the iPad, the Vision Pro’s price must decrease significantly over time. Additionally, the mixed-reality industry itself is still in its infancy, requiring widespread acceptance and integration into everyday life—a process that will undoubtedly take time.

While the Vision Pro holds promise as a potential contender to the iPad, its high price and the nascent state of the mixed-reality industry present formidable obstacles. Until significant changes occur—such as a substantial price reduction and widespread adoption of mixed-reality technology—the Vision Pro’s ability to supplant the iPad remains uncertain. While the future may hold opportunities for the Vision Pro to encroach upon the iPad’s territory, that reality seems distant for now.
